How to buy and connect a domain?
A domain is your business's web address — and where most small businesses get tangled up is DNS and SSL. Picking a name is easy; those parts look scary. This guide walks the whole chain from name to business email; most of the technical work is automatic.
Four traits of a good domain
- Spellable when spoken — can you describe it over the phone?
- Short — ideally under 15 characters
- No hyphens or numbers —
salon-nova-1.comwon't stick - Tells the business or brand — adding your city works locally
If your brand name is taken: add your service (novahairsalon.com), add your city, or try a different extension.
Choosing an extension
| Extension | When |
|---|---|
.com | Default choice; highest recognition |
.shop, .studio, .co | .com is taken and fits your brand |
| Cheap promotional extensions | Watch — renewal price can be several times the first year |
Check renewal price, not the intro price.

3. Wait for SSL (a few minutes)
Security certificate installs automatically and renews itself. You see a padlock in the browser; no extra cost, no action needed.
4. Add business email
An address like info@yourbusiness.com signals professionalism better than Gmail. Create mail boxes linked to your domain in your panel.

What is DNS and why wait?
DNS is like a phone book — it points your domain name to a server. When a record changes, the internet's servers need time to learn it. Usually minutes, sometimes hours. During that time, your site might look old on some devices and new on others; that's normal.
Common mistakes
Picking a long or hyphenated name. You can't describe it out loud, and it won't work on Instagram either.
Ignoring renewal price. First year cheap, year two expensive is a common trap.
Letting someone else register your domain. Your domain should be in your account; when you part ways with an agency, this becomes a problem.
Never setting up business email. Sending offers on Gmail costs you in price negotiations.
